Are You Treating Your Hyperpigmentation the Right Way?

Updated: Oct 21, 2023

Hyperpigmentation can be a bothersome thing. With our skin constantly evolving, the melanin does as well which can lead to an unwanted uneven complexion.

Are there different kinds of hyperpigmentation? Yes! There are 4 types of hyperpigmentation, to better suit your skins needs let's take a look at them!

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

These are the annoying dark spots that appear after your blemish has healed from your acne breakout. This is the most common situation when it comes to acne. The hyperpigmentation is the result of your skin recovering from the inflammation of breaking out. PIH also results from any damage to the skin such as a scrape on the knee or surgery incision sites.

Photoaging

Photoaging or premature aging is one of the most common effects of constant overexposure to harmful UV rays. This means natural AND artificial lights as well! Longer wavelength UVA rays are to blame in particular, as they affect the cells that control pigment (melanocytes), bringing out an uneven complexion.

Melasma

Most commonly associated with pregnancy, melasma can be recognized by symmetrical brown or grey patches that most often appear on the cheeks, bridge of the nose, forehead, chin, and above the upper lip. Other factors that can contribute to melasma include birth control pills, hormone therapy, stress, and thyroid disease. UVA rays can also cause those melanocytes to spike and cause more pigment to the skin resulting in melasma.

Freckles

Even though they are completely harmless, the overproduction of melanin from overexposure to the UV rays can appear on the face in the form of brown spots. Yes, in some instances freckles are hereditary; however, if you aren’t prone to freckles and you see them pop up, you now will know why.

How can you treat and prevent hyperpigmentation?

Formulas that contain AHA's or BHA's such as glycolic acid and salicylic acid are effective. Physical exfoliation is another great way to get rid of pesky hyperpigmentation as your skin regenerates every 28 days, so exfoliating off those extra dead skin cells can produce a brighter more even complexion. In addition, products that contain hydroquinone or other lightening ingredients are desirable as they help lighten up the dark spots. And of course, the most important aspect SUNSCREEN!!! Don't forget that broad-spectrum sunscreen in your daily routine!

What Our Patients Say

stars.png

I’m new here but have had an outstanding service and even better results!! I am very pleased and happy to have found this unassuming magic salon with exceptional technicians and technology as well as very reasonable prices. I was a little timid to start as skin is of course very important and fragile to entrust to someone new… but now all I can say is I can’t recommend this place enough to all my friends and family. If you love your skin leave it to Prestige Laser Studio and Tanja and her tech ladies! and you’ll be very satisfied! Thank you and can’t wait to see you again next week and again and then again! -AO
