Combating Hyperpigmentation: A Year round routine

Updated: Oct 9, 2024

Pigmentation is a natural colour of a person's skin and it is related to melanin production.

Melanin protects the skin cells and their DNA by absorbing the sun's ultraviolet rays.

Understanding Hyperpigmentation:

Hyperpigmentation is characterized by the increased production and accumulation of melanin that is unevenly distributed on the skin, which causes a darkened appearance in small or large areas. Incidence is higher in people with higher Fitzpatrick types because their skin naturally contains more melanin.

There are 3 different types of Hyperpigmentation:

  1. Photodamage

  2. Melasma

  3. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

It all begins with medical grade skincare regimen recommended by one of our medical estheticians after your skin assessment has been completed.

ZO Skin Health is a medical grade line that is clinically proven to help lighten and prevent current and future hyperpigmentation.

Preventative measures:

Sunscreen is #1

This is crucial year-round, not just in summer. UV rays can penetrate clouds and windows, so sunscreen is a must even on cloudy days or when indoors.

  • Reapply Regularly: Especially after sweating or swimming, even if using water-resistant sunscreen.

  • Wear Protective Clothing: Hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved clothing can provide additional protection.

  • Avoid Direct Sun Exposure

Topical Treatment options:

  • Retinol free products

A technologically advanced skin brightener clinically proven to increase luminosity, visibly improve skin clarity and fade the appearance of dark spots for a brighter, more even complexion. Non-hydroquinone and non-retinol.

10% Vitamin C

that brightens skin, promoting a more even skin tone and minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Retinol based products

Retinol skin brightener (.25%, .5% and 1%)

A retinol-based solution clinically proven to rapidly improve the appearance of uneven skin tone for a brighter, clearer and smoother complexion.-are an excellent way to even out skin tone and break up that surface pigmentation

  • Gold standard of skin lightening ingredients

Hydroquinone program

For the quickest, most effective results for hyperpigmentation and especially melasma- Hydroquinone is the gold standard of skin lightening.

Hydroquinone will decrease the production of pigment and help even out skin tone over 3-5 month period. It is extremely important to continuously keep using products that will continue to maintain results created throughout the year.

Professional Treatments options:

  • Chemical Peels: Exfoliating the top layer of skin, which can help reduce the appearance of dark spots.

  • Laser pigment removal: Target melanin to reduce hyperpigmentation. It's crucial to consult with a medical esthetician to find the best solution to your concern depending on your skin type

  • Microneedling: Can help in treating post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Regardless of the treatment or preventative measures you choose, here at Prestige Laser & Skin Clinic we believe that consistency is vital. Hyperpigmentation tends to develop over time, and similarly, reducing its appearance is a gradual process. Regular skincare routines, consistent sun protection, and a healthy lifestyle are your best defense against these pesky dark spots.

What Our Patients Say

stars.png

I’m new here but have had an outstanding service and even better results!! I am very pleased and happy to have found this unassuming magic salon with exceptional technicians and technology as well as very reasonable prices. I was a little timid to start as skin is of course very important and fragile to entrust to someone new… but now all I can say is I can’t recommend this place enough to all my friends and family. If you love your skin leave it to Prestige Laser Studio and Tanja and her tech ladies! and you’ll be very satisfied! Thank you and can’t wait to see you again next week and again and then again! -AO
