Retinol - Love/hate relationship

Updated: Oct 20, 2023

What is retinol ?

Retinol is one of the most researched anti-aging ingredients used in topical facial skincare with decades of clinical research and real-world results. Found in some of the most trusted wrinkle creams and anti-aging serums, the powerful derivative of vitamin A possesses a multitude of benefits for the skin, including:

  • Smoother skin texture + radiant skin tone

  • Improved skin renewal for healthier skin barrier + minimized sensitivity

  • Increased exfoliation for reduction of clogged pores, breakouts + skin congestion

  • Visibly improved skin evenness

  • Diminished appearance of fine lines + wrinkles

There are 2 types of delivery systems when it comes to retinol in the ZO SkinHealth medical skin care line

1. Oleosome

Olesosome delivery targets primarily the epidermis and secondary the dermis. Products such as ZO Radical Night Repair and Retinol Skin Brightener

have been engineered with this technology. This means that as soon as the product makes contact with the skin, they begin to release their content into the stratum corneum. This includes the delivery of the loaded retinol. It's not all released at once, giving the property of controlled release. This allows the actives to be present for extended periods of time.

2. Micro-emulsion

Micro emulsion targets primarily the dermis and secondarily the epidermis. Wrinkle & Texture Repair utilizes a micro emulsion delivery system for rapid release of retinol. This technology allows for penetrated acceleration into the skin. The droplets quickly head to the dermis where they assist in enhancing cellular activity. Anticipated reactions when starting a retinol based product are a part of the process for many and the results are worth waiting for!

Phase 1- REPAIR

Expected reactions: Redness, dryness, burning, irritation, itching- PEAK of reactions

Phase 2- IMPROVEMENT

Expected reactions: Peak reactions start to subside and overall improvement of the skin's appearance starts to become noticeable and the patient is more comfortable

Phase 3- COMPLETION

Expected reactions: Minimal to no reactions. Skin's appearance is optimized and skin health is restored. Patient is comfortable

Finishing off with sunscreen is a MUST! Any of the ZO SkinHealth chemical or physical sunscreen along with Jane Iredale dry sunscreen is the ideal finish!
