Summer is a beautiful time of year—filled with sunshine, patio lunches, vacations, and long days spent outdoors. But as much as we love the glow of summer on our skin, it’s also the season when sun exposure becomes a major consideration in aesthetic treatments.
At Prestige Laser & Skin Clinic in Burnaby, one of the most common questions we hear during warmer months is: “Can I still get this treatment in summer?”
The short answer is: yes—but it depends on your lifestyle.
Not all treatments are created equal when it comes to UV exposure, and not all skin conditions respond well to procedures performed during sun-intense seasons. That’s why we always prioritize education, safety, and honest guidance when creating your summer treatment plan.
Let’s dive into the reality of skin treatments in summer: what’s safe, what to avoid, and how we keep your skin protected all season long—while still helping you reach your goals.
Why Summer Changes the Game
During the fall and winter, our skin is naturally more protected—covered by clothing, exposed to less UV radiation, and less likely to be inflamed by heat or humidity. But in summer, everything changes:
UV rays are stronger and more frequent
We spend more time outdoors (even without meaning to)
Tanning—intentional or not—makes the skin more sensitive
Heat, sweat, and humidity can increase skin reactivity
Sunscreen may be forgotten or not reapplied often enough
And when your skin is inflamed, tanned, or overexposed to the sun, certain treatments can actually do more harm than good. Hyperpigmentation, burns, prolonged redness, and poor healing outcomes are more likely in compromised summer skin.
That doesn’t mean you need to pause your skincare altogether. It just means you need a strategic plan that puts your safety first—and that’s where we come in.
Treatments We Approach with Caution in Summer
At Prestige, we don’t take risks with your skin. There are several treatments we either postpone or modify in the summer due to increased sun exposure risk. Here are a few:
IPL is one of our most popular treatments for pigmentation, redness, and broken capillaries—but it's very melanin-sensitive. Treating recently tanned or sun-exposed skin can cause post-inflammatory pigmentation, especially in skin types prone to melasma or darker complexions.
That’s why we typically recommend postponing IPL until fall or winter, or only proceeding if you’ve been avoiding sun for at least 2 weeks and are committed to wearing sunscreen daily.
Laser hair removal also targets pigment—in this case, the pigment in the hair follicle. But tanned skin competes with the laser’s energy, increasing the risk of surface burns, pigmentation changes, and discomfort.
We may pause or adjust your laser hair removal schedule during summer, especially if you’ve been away on vacation or spending time at the beach.
Treatments can be done if clients are mindful of the sun and re-apply sunscreen every 2 hours. It truly depends on one's lifestyle and sun exposure on a daily basis.
Summer-Safe Treatments We Love
Not everything is off-limits! In fact, many treatments are completely safe during the summer, especially when combined with diligent sun care and guidance from our team.
All of these treatments still require sun protection application every 2 hours and hats while outside for the safest treatment outcomes.
Some of our favourite warm-weather-safe services include:
1. HydraFacial
HydraFacial is the ultimate summer glow treatment. It deeply cleanses, exfoliates, and infuses the skin with antioxidants and hydration—without causing sensitivity or downtime.
It’s perfect before a trip, wedding, or event, and it helps keep pores clear during sweatier months when breakouts are more likely.
Laser Genesis is a great year-round treatment—especially in summer. It gently heats the skin to stimulate collagen production, reduce redness, refine pores, and smooth overall texture with zero downtime.
It’s perfect for maintaining a clear, radiant complexion between more intensive treatments and is ideal before special events or during acne-prone summer months when you want results without irritation or photosensitivity.
3. Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning is a safe, effective way to instantly smooth and brighten the skin—no downtime, no harsh chemicals, and no sun sensitivity. By gently removing dead skin cells and peach fuzz, it allows for better product absorption and flawless makeup application.
It’s a perfect summer refresh before a vacation or photoshoot and pairs beautifully with facials or Laser Genesis for an extra glow.
Yes, even in summer! Morpheus8 Burst uses radiofrequency microneedling to remodel skin and reduce unwanted fat—perfect for the double chin, arms, abdomen, and more.
Because it works below the surface of the skin, Morpheus8 can be safely performed in warmer months as long as patients avoid direct sun exposure before and after and follow post-care guidelines closely. It’s a fantastic non-surgical solution for body sculpting that we often recommend year-round.
This gentle laser treatment improves skin texture, refines pores, and boosts radiance. It’s safe for all skin types, has no downtime, and can be performed in summer with sunscreen and protection from direct UV.
6. EMSELLA
No sun risk here! EMSELLA is a pelvic floor treatment that requires no skin contact at all—just sit, relax, and let the technology do the work. It’s great for bladder control, core strength, and postpartum support—summer-friendly in every way.
How We Protect Your Skin All Summer
At Prestige, our approach is never one-size-fits-all. Before booking any treatment, we do a thorough consultation that includes:
Asking about recent sun exposure, vacations, and tanning
Reviewing your skincare routine (especially SPF use)
Assessing your skin type, tone, and treatment history
Customizing your treatment plan based on seasonal safety
We also make sure you’re fully informed about how to prepare for and recover from your treatment, especially in summer. That includes pre-treatment precautions, post-treatment care, and product recommendations to maximize results and minimize risk.
Sun Protection Is Non-Negotiable
If there’s one thing we emphasize more than anything in summer—it’s SPF.
Daily sunscreen use isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s a must. It protects your skin from UV damage, helps prevent pigmentation, reduces premature aging, and ensures your treatments actually work.
At the clinic, we carry a full range of medical-grade ZO® Skin Health sunscreens that are non-comedogenic, broad-spectrum, and suited to every skin type:
Daily Sheer SPF 50 – water- and sweat-resistant, perfect for active lifestyles
Smart Tone SPF 50 – blends to your natural skin tone for a flawless finish
Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30 – doubles as a makeup base, great for everyday wear
We’ll help you choose the right one for your skin—and show you how to use it effectively.
Our Honest, Human Approach
We understand that it’s frustrating to hear, “It’s better to wait.” But we promise—when we recommend postponing or adjusting your treatment plan, it’s because we truly care about your long-term results and your skin’s health.
Our job is not to sell you something—it’s to guide you with integrity and compassion.
That’s why patients trust us year-round to tell the truth, create custom plans, and offer safe, effective solutions that work with your life and your lifestyle—even in the sunny season.
